Cowes Chain Ferry – Out of Service

Local Notice to Mariners No. 29(T) of 2026

Notice is hereby given that the Cowes Chain Ferry will be out of service to undergo maintenance operations between Monday 21 September and Sunday 27 September 2026.

The Cowes Chain Ferry will be taken out of service at 0500hrs on Monday 21 September and will return to service at 0500hrs on Monday 28 September. During this time, the Chain Ferry may be moored on either side of the river depending on the works to be carried out. During working hours, the Chain Ferry will be monitoring VHF 69.

On Tuesday 22 September, the Chain Ferry chains will be replaced and there will be restrictions on passing the ferry for short periods of time during the morning. The Cowes Harbour vessel ‘HM1’, will be on station from 1330hrs to warn / stop traffic at the times when passing is not permitted. Please call ahead on VHF 69 to ensure it is safe to pass, before you set off. During this operation, the Chain Ferry will be moored on the East side of the river.

All mariners are advised to navigate in the area with caution, and to avoid creating wash in the vicinity of the Cowes Chain Ferry.

This local notice to mariners will self-cancel at 2359 on 28 September 2026.
